My Bucket List: Hearing a Case in the US Supreme Court

Its hard for Moms to get away, right?!!? For most families, the Mom is the primary caregiver for children and sometimes even the glue that holds everything together for a household. There was a time in my life not too long ago when I could pick up and go where ever I wanted when ever. I thoroughly enjoyed my twenties. I worked hard and learned a lot. I was very career-focused and dedicated to my profession of working with students with special needs. I was selfish and spent money ridiculously. Then I went to law school. I enjoyed the academia side of it. I spent 7 credit hours (out of 90) studying education/special education law. I wrote a 40 page paper on tuition reimbursement. Fascinating!

I got married, got a job and THEN I HAD KIDS! Life changed! My priorities changed. My husband and I grew as people, as parents and in our relationship. My family is everything to me but it is also nice to get away. Oh but the Mom Guilt!!! Yes, I needed to get away but that meant leaving my little ones. My husband is amazing but hadn’t been alone that long with both of them. Sometimes, Moms have to take care of themselves!

On January 11, 2017, the Supreme Court heard a case to determine the level of educational benefit that school districts must confer on children with disabilities to provide them with the free appropriate public education guaranteed by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. I got to go and it was an amazing experience!

Listening to oral arguments at the Supreme Court was not at all like I thought it would be. The Justices were very conversational and even made a few jokes. I suppose they can do what they want since they are a judge in the highest court in the country and can serve for their lifetime. The Justices appeared to be prepared and asked good questions. The whole thing was over in an hour!

If attending oral arguments at the Supreme Court is on your bucket list, I recommend doing your research before you go. One surprising thing to me is that the court is small and they only allow 40-70 visitors per case. They only give tickets out on the morning of the arguments which results in people waiting in line for hours sometimes. If you want to learn more about visiting the Supreme Court, click here

This was such a fantastic experience. I’m so glad I was able to get away for a few days to do this. While I missed my boys, they survived without me. Not only did they survive, they got some extra quality time with their Daddy. What is on your bucket list?

Hi, I’m Lisa and I’m a 30-something year old Mom to 2 adorable and active boys. Kamdyn is 6 months old and Kasyn is 3 years old. I have spent my professional career working with students with an autism spectrum disorder as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. I currently work part-time with my husband through www.keyaba.com As a Mama and Wife, I grocery shop with coupons and try living a frugal life (although I’m not perfect). I also like to scrapbook and capture every moment possible. I love to travel. I’m getting better at meal-planning and cooking regularly. My boys and I are on-the-go and always taking advantage of various opportunities and activities around Dayton. My favorite things about motherhood are watching my children learn and discover and rough-housing with my boys.
