The First Date: Why we Celebrate

2

Every first date is special in its own way, whether it’s because you finally found your soulmate, got a hilariously funny story out of it or learned a valuable dating lesson. Ours (my husband and mine) is special in many ways. We found our future spouses but we also both moved on from huge life disappointments. My husband was in the final stages of a long divorce and I was newly “on the market” after being in two, long-term relationships that spanned about 6 years. We came into each other’s lives two broken people looking for something to mend those cracks and make us happy again.

That first date was a pivotal moment in our lives. How could we have known that in nearly two short years we’d have a home together, a happily blended family, married to each other with a sweet baby girl on the way? We have overcome so much in that time frame. We’ve seen extreme highs, walked through times of heartbreaking lows, and the general craziness that is life without ever questioning the other and our love for one another and our family. People have asked us how we manage it. How one of us hasn’t just thrown our hands up in desperation and walked away. The answer folks is simple. Love. When you have it, and it’s real, deep and true. Nothing can alter that and make you think differently about it. Neither of us can imagine life without the other even if we tried because frankly, it’s not an option.

We celebrate that first meeting the same way each year. We go to the same local restaurant here in Dayton, Coco’s Bistro. We schedule it at the same time and try to sit in the same spot. We ask each other our high and low from the previous year. What our goal as a family could be for the next. Our focus is on each other. Not our phones, not the stress of the day, but of our journey and how we managed to end up at the table again a year later from the last time and still so very much in love. Meeting my husband changed my life in a way I couldn’t imagine and because of that I will always celebrate and treasure that first date. Our world is a crazy place and you never know what each day will hold.

So celebrate those special moments. Celebrate those special people in your life. And celebrate the fact you’ve made it through another full year despite the ups and downs. Life is too short not to.

Do you celebrate your relationship milestones? I would love to hear about it in the comments!

I love every moment I’ve had with my husband and we are sure to focus on how lucky we are to have found each other.
