Ditch the Pre-Packaged Microwave Popcorn!

Everywhere you turn you see articles on how bad microwave popcorn is for your family.

These articles have devastated me because there is nothing I love more than family movie night with buttery popcorn!

According to an article on Live Strong

  • There is a chemical used in the nonstick coating on the inside of the popcorn bags that decomposes, producing a compound called perfluorooctanoic acid. This chemical has been associated with increased risk of certain cancers, including liver and prostate cancer.  And…
  • There’s a lung disease that’s also associated with microwave popcorn. A chemical called diacetyl, used in the flavoring agent added to microwave popcorn, increases rates of an otherwise relatively rare lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans…

I am here to show you a very easy – and much cheaper – way to make popcorn – (without the need to invest in an air popper)…

What You’ll Need:

  • Popcorn Kernels
  • Oil
  • Brown Paper Lunch Bag
  • 1/2 cup – Measuring Cup
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Optional
    • Salt
    • Butter
    • Other seasoning or toppings

What to do! (seriously the ease in this will blow you away!)

Step 1: Scoop 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels

Step 2: Add 1/2 Tablespoon of oil to the measuring cup and stir with a spoon to coat

Step 3: If adding salt – add it now

Step 4: Dump into brown paper bag – yes the oil will begin to be absorbed somewhat- but the last step will be quick

Step 5: Close brown paper bag – I “dog-ear” the corners to prevent popcorn from escaping

Step 6: Lay bag sideways in the microwave (I put a paper towel under it to absorb any leaking oil)

Step 7: Turn microwave on for 5 minutes – It will not take that long- but I like to ensure the mircowave doesn’t stop before my popping does. As with store bought microwave popcorn – stay close and stop the microwave when you stop hearing it pop every few seconds.

Step 8: Remove from microwave and dump in bowl – add butter or other toppings…or eat plain!

BOOM!  What do you think?  Easy?

Hello Lovely Dayton Mommas!! I think being a mother is the greatest achievement of my life…I am one of those crazy people who LOVES being pregnant – but will now vicariously live through everyone else’s pregnancies – as my husband (Chris) and I have decided that 2 littles are as big as our family will grow. Miles (4) and Miro (2) keep us on our toes – we like to get messy with art supplies, jump in rain puddles, have nightly dance parties, explore parks, cuddle for movies & skip in the halls at school. I work full-time as a Director of Customer Experience and manage a team of 14, in my spare time I am also getting my MBA through the University of Dayton. I look forward to sharing my thoughts, blunders, successes and failures. #parentlikenooneiswatching
