March Dayton Dozen: Guide to Family-Friendly Events {2018}

As the old saying goes “March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb” leaving us Ohioans scratching our heads as to what the weather will be each day throughout the month and what to do with our families. Lucky for you, here at Dayton Moms Blog we’ve got your March Dayton Dozen covered and it’s full of family fun for those “lion” and “lamb” days ahead. 

1) Step Afrika! @ Victoria Theatre

***DMB Tip*** Consider hanging around after the 1pm show or come early to the 4pm show to participate in a fun workshop. (Workshop 2:15-3:45/ages 5 and up/$5 cost per child)

Come and enjoy the first ever professional dance company dedicated to “Stepping”, a traditional African style of dance. Be ready to be entertained by this high energy performance and learn more about the history and tradition of Stepping. 

2) Maple Syrup Festival @ Hueston Woods State Park

***DMB*** All events are taking place outside, so be sure to dress the family appropriately for the day’s weather.

Head out to Hueston Woods and make a day out their Maple Syrup Festival. The park will be hosting a variety of events from an all you can eat pancake breakfast, maple syrup tours, hayrides and hikes. Check out their Facebook page for all the details!

3) Sugarbush Walk @ Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm – Dayton

***DMB Tip*** As this is outdoors be prepared for the weather, dress your family appropriately so everyone is ready to enjoy this fun-filled, learning adventure together.

  • Admission: Aullwood Members – Free; Non Members – 2 and under: Free, 3 – 11: $5, 12 and older: $7

Join the staff of Aullwood Farm on a walk to experience the sap flow and the making of maple syrup. Discover the wonder of food making from trees as we walk to the Sugarhouse to observe the boiling of sap and drawing off of warm maple syrup!

4) Victorian Afternoon Tea @ Patterson Homestead

***DMB*** This event is perfect for older kids with a love of history.

  • March 4th
  • 2pm-4pm
  • $25 per Non-Member/$20 per Dayton History Member

Enjoy an authentic, three-course Victorian tea hosted by historic reenactors and learn about the Patterson family.

5) ARTventres @ The Dayton Art Institute – Dayton

***DMB Tip*** Make a day of this “ARTventure” and plan to go before or after the starting time to also explore the museum. They have an amazing collection and frequently have traveling collections on display.

Take your family on an ARTventure at the museum!  Drop in between 1 & 3 p.m. to learn new art-making techniques and create artwork and memories. This program is perfect for all ages and all levels of artistic ability. All materials are provided.

6) The Wonderful World of Disney on Ice @ US Bank Arena – Cincinnati

***DMB Tip*** Arrive early to park and shop for souvenirs.

Enter a dazzling world of adventure at The Wonderful World of Disney On Ice! Join Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse on an inspiring walk down memory lane in celebration of magic and family fun.

7) St. Patrick’s Day

***DMB Tip*** Consider looking up some fun St. Patty’s Day crafts or take a trip to the library to find some books about the holiday and other Irish folk tales.

The celebration of the Patron Saint of Ireland. Traditionally observed by feasting with friends and family.

8) Super Science Saturday @ The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

***DMB Tip*** Since this is a free event (with free admission) go early to beat the crowd, they only do this 4 times a year!

Come and enjoy all that the Boonshoft museum has to offer on this special Saturday event. This special learning day also includes access to their Special Exhibitions, Space Theater Shows (limited seating available), and public programming.

9) Ohio Arts, Crafts, and Vendors Expo @ The Montgomery County Fairgrounds

***DMB Tip*** Make sure you bring some cash, just in case.

  • Cost $5

Head over to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds and enjoy a day of Arts and Crafts. Browse multiple vendors, listen to speakers from local charities, and snag a bite to eat from one of multiple food truck vendors. This is sure to be fun for everyone in the family.

10) Friends of SICSA Annual Spring Bazaar@ SICSA Pet Adoption Center

***DMB Tip*** If your kiddos love animals like mine be ready for them to fall in love with the adoptable pets!

Head over to SICSA’s annual Spring Bazaar! Dog and cat related crafts and gifts, T-shirts, homemade dog biscuits, pet and people gifts, spring gardening and planting items, collectibles, and much more. You can also visit their adoptable animals as well! All proceeds benefit SICSA.

11) Hollywood Series at the Air Force Museum Theater @ The Air Force Museum

***DMB Tip*** This months movie is Dunkirk. Due to the content, this is an event intended for older, more mature children. If you have kiddos that enjoy military history, or history in general this would be a great event for them.

12) Reds Opening Day Celebration @ Fountain Square – Cincinnati

***DMB Tip*** Be prepared for lots of walking and being outdoors! This one is worth the drive if you haven’t experienced an opening day event before.

Head down to Cinci for this yearly event to celebrate the beginning of baseball season. Enjoy live music, food trucks and the game on the jumbo screen right in the middle of Fountain Square!
