Think spring, think spring, think spring!!!
Think spring & it’ll come sooner, right?! Well, that’s what we’re hoping for anyways. Since we’re in the dead of winter, what is more refreshing than a craft that promises a peek of spring? With limited activities due to this recent tundra-like atmosphere, my kiddos & I were succumbing to some serious cabin fever. So we bundled up & ventured out to the store for supplies to make a bird seed wreath!
Here’s what you’ll need on your shopping list:
- 8 cups bird seed
- 2 packets gelatin
- 6 tablespoons corn syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- Cooking spray
Grab a bundt cake pan out of your cabinet & spray generously with cooking spray. In a mixing bowl, add the gelatin, corn syrup, water and flour. Mix well until you have paste-like consistency. Now it’s time for the bird seed. Be sure to call in the professional measurers and stirrers:
The mixture should be fairly sticky. Spoon into the bundt cake pan and press firmly.
Leave it sit overnight to firm up. I was a little skeptical that is was too sticky & wouldn’t solidify, but it did! Add some string or ribbon to hang from your tree & you will be the most popular bird hang out on the block!
Not only was this a fun yet simple craft that didn’t require a whole lot of hovering supervision, but we were able to make it a bit educational as well. We touched on mathematics with the measurement of ingredients. We also covered science explaining the basics of a chemical change occurring when mixing wet and dry ingredients, and we also talked about birds and what migration is.
Our wreath didn’t last very long as our feathered friends enjoyed the winter feast within just a few days! We’ll probably make another one soon since we have some left over ingredients. Happy crafting, Dayton Moms!
