5 Parenting Tips from Michael Scott

The Emmy award-winning show “The Office” ended five years ago. Despite that, it is my go to any time of the day. I’m guilty of starting the 9 seasons over as soon as the last episode ends.

Each time I watch it, I find new things to laugh at. While watching this time through, I noticed while Michael is the world’s best boss, he would have also made a great parent. Here are some reasons why:

1. Sometimes when things get too chaotic, you need an emergency meeting.

It is a common occurrence in my house for someone to be walking in the door while someone is walking out. Work schedules, church schedules, weekend plans, oh my! There is definitely a time and a place to blow the whistle and all come together for a few! Conference room – er, Family room – 5 minutes!

2. A party fixes everything.

Especially during these freezing winter months, the days seem to get gloomy and gray. Who needs to wait for birthdays or holidays; bake a cake and put on a hat to spice up the week!

3. Fake job titles help.

Although it’s not assistant to the regional manager, kids love being the door holder or table setter – as long as they are the only ones.

4. Awards and positive reinforcements keep motivation high.

Now I’m not one to applaud using a napkin or brushing teeth, but sometimes you have to pick your battles. Whether Dundies or Reeses, the simple recognition can go a long way.

5. Sometimes you have to laugh at your own jokes.

Mostly because our little humans don’t think we’re that funny. And because “that’s what she said” jokes are inappropriate for them.

Along with being a great boss at a midsize paper company, Michael gets a Dundie for best parenting tips! What are some other things have you learned from him?
