When Baby Punches You In The Face

Parenting gurus come in all shapes and sizes. The blogger who is deep in the trenches of the #momgrind. The grandmother who is safely on the other side. The author with a new way of raising kids to be quality humans. We find these parenting experts and we heed their advice. Repeating the pearls of wisdom to our friends, hoping it will help them as much as it helped us.

Unlikely Expert

My go-to parenting advice comes from a not-so-obvious guru named Mike Tyson. You can re-read that if you would like, it’s not a typo. The man who is infamous for biting another human’s ear off is the author of my go-to parenting advice.

We all have those people in our lives who are about to be first-time parents and are convinced they have it all figured out. Heck, I was that person before my first kid. Whether it be screen time, breastfeeding, sleep patterns, vaccines, milestones…you name it, they already know how it will go for them.

I am all for people having a plan and there is great value and sanity that can be found in creating that plan. However, despite them having a great plan, my, and Mike’s, advice to them is always the same.

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”

You can make a plan, but this adventure, very likely, will not go according to plan. This kid, in their lovely, adorable, baby-ish way is going to punch them (and their plan) in the face. AND THAT’S OK!! Make your plan. Enjoy the process of preparing, but understand that if (read: when) something goes off plan, it’s still going to be ok. Getting punched in the face is how learn we can take a punch and keep going.
