Memories in the Making

2

It was a hot summer day and I was running some errands around town when it happened… My toddler spotted the splashpad through the back window of the car. His little voice began to squeal, “Mommy! Mommy!! Go park, Mommy!! Please, please, please? Really, please?” Any other day I would have listed off reasons why we couldn’t, the first being that we didn’t have our swimsuits with us, but for some reason that day I said, “Yes.”

So often in life, we get caught up in our daily, often arbitrary, to-do lists. We check off our tasks and move on to the next, wondering what we’re really doing it all for. I’m as guilty of this as they come. Just days before this fateful morning, I was feeling a little down as questions swirled through my mind about my worthiness as a mother (unnecessary mom-guilt at its finest). That day, when my sweet boy made his request, something lept in my heart and I knew that my response could become one of those memories I’d treasure forever.

Obviously, we can’t relinquish our responsibilities every day, but the greatest lesson I learned that day was to seize those times that I can. Twenty years from now, I won’t look back and remember the tasks that didn’t get completed, but I know without a doubt that I will always remember the genuine squeals of delight that sprung out from the depths of my son’s soul as he ran full-speed-ahead into the splash pad wearing nothing but his cargo shorts and a big sweet smile! Goodness gracious, even thinking back on it now brings happy tears to my eyes.

What are YOU doing to make a memory today?

    • Thanks so much, Suzanne! To-do lists are wonderful, but I tend to get trapped by mine too! It’s nice to stray from it every now and then… those little smiles are so worth it 🙂
