Art Enrichment

wmOK, so I’m totally biased on this subject, but art is amazing! Yes, my degree is in Fine Art – Photography, so I tend to get a little art nerdy. My kids tend to err on the crafty side with an art supplies stash that rivals that of a box store.   But here is what I love. I love that my kids see colors and shapes for more than what they are. My oldest child can “create” her way out of a problem by using skills she has picked up in Art classes. It may sound silly, but I credit some of her visual problem solving skills to trial and error she’s had creating art projects.
There is a place in Kettering that we love. It has made such a huge difference in my introverted child.
We have found a place where she feels like she belongs! It’s called SPARK Art (sparkartstudio.com) . The class subject choices are perfect and divided up into categories by age. Jenn Farrington, the owner and creative force behind SPARK Art is one of the best educators of children you will ever meet. She’s award winning in the Dayton community. She has a way with kids that is totally hands off, yet keeps control of the classes. I kid you not, my kids have learned things in her classes that were tailored down lessons from what I was learning at Wright State.

Jenn has regular classes, side by side for toddlers, summer camps, work shops and drop-in studio times. If you want the most special thing they offer, it’s the private birthday parties. No joke this is a real conversation between us..
Me: Here’s a doozy, feel free to say no. Halloween themed birthday party. Sculpture projects and a piñata at the end in the dead of winter Jenn: LOVE IT! (the next year) Me: Japanese tea party? Jenn: Got it!
wmPhillips-8512Spark will totally transform the studio into a magical wonderland of birthday awesomeness. Be prepared, they fill up pretty quickly, especially the party dates, camps and workshops.

What’s so great is that Jenn will incorporate hidden history or a science into art lessons. When a child can use art to apply to other areas of study and cross both Art and a science or technology….AMAZING things will happen with those kids! I’ve seen it first hand.
