Real Mom Confession: I Have Hypothyroidism

2
In a previous post {Real Mom Confession: I Don’t Love My Body}, I confessed my frustrations with my body and my inability to lose weight. I talked about the importance of listening to your body (even if it takes a few months of stubbornness) and seeking help when something just doesn’t seem quite right. Today I’m here to take you a little bit further on my journey in hopes of encouraging you to begin your own.

It was 9am on a Friday morning. I had just finished getting myself and the boys ready for the day when my phone began to ring. Finally, the call I had been waiting for – the call that would tell me if I just needed to try harder in pursuit of my own health goals or if I needed to equip myself with a new set of tools to move forward. The voice on the other end was kind and familiar: my physician’s nurse. She delivered the news to me that day: I have hypothyroidism.

Initially, I was devastated, but after allowing myself to dwell on it for a little while I finally realized something: instead of mourning what felt like my body’s betrayal, I should be celebrating the fact that I finally had an answer and a solution to my problems. I could finally move forward to becoming the happier and healthier woman that I wanted to be. And I finally knew why I was experiencing all of those seemingly random symptoms. Hallelujah!

I’m just beginning this journey with hypothyroidism. I still don’t have all of the answers yet regarding my own specific dosage and ways in which I may choose to change my diet to increase my overall health, but I have finally crossed the starting line. For me, that first step is everything and I only wish that I had begun sooner. Through sharing my story, I sincerely hope that you are encouraged to take the first step in your own journey towards health and happiness. No matter what your struggle may be, if you feel like something is “off” in your own life and if you’re dealing with your own weight, mental, emotional, or overall health battles, PLEASE pick up the phone today and make an appointment with your doctor. If nothing else, your doctor can at least point you in the right direction to uncover your personal path to wellness!
