Mom Confession

Have any of you mamas out there ever told a little fib to your kids to get them to try new foods? Ok, maybe not a fib, but left out pertinent information like what exactly they are eating? C’mon, you know you’ve done it. I can’t be the only one. Kids see green things or something not shaped like a dinosaur or Mickey Mouse and they shut down.

My kids aren’t picky eaters, but the first time they see a new food the “do I like this?” ” I don’t want it!” and ” I don’t like that!” start rolling in. So, mama gets creative.

Last week, for example, I made venison in the crockpot. If you’ve had venison before, you know it can be a little gamey. Well, the meat soaked overnight in some apple cider vinegar to reduce that taste and, hopefully, fool the kids (insert evil laugh). Side note – if you’ve never looked into the amazingness of apple cider vinegar, check it out. We love Braggs.

When it came time for dinner, I plated their food just as I would for a regular beef roast with potatoes, corn, green beans, and gravy. Guess what?! No one even noticed! I even got “Mommy, this steak is yummy!”

For the record, I’ve been using venison for our tacos and spaghetti for well over a month and no one has noticed!

Did I trick the kids? Yes. Will it scar them for life? I hope not. I just want to ensure they are getting a variety of food and not just living on turkey dogs and dinosaur chicken nuggets! Can I get an amen?!

Then as a reminder of how life comes full circle when you become a parent, I was telling my mom about how I’ve been getting them to eat this iron rich “steak” for awhile now and I feel a little bad about it, but not enough to stop. She leaves me with this little gem- “Your father and I did that to you with food all the time as a kid, you turned ok, for the most part!”

Well, isn’t that something, I am not alone!
