The Lice-Capades :: What Do I Do?

IMG_0592I have a confession. ‘ And, for those of you that have, I’m sure you’re giving me a salute worthy of the Hunger Games right now. But, first I want to make 2 things VERY clear.

Kids with lice are not dirty, unkempt, or come from bad parenting!
Parents, when your kids get lice, YOU are not a bad, dirty or negligent parent!

IMG_0591Dealing with Lice is hell! Lice will make you swear and probably drink! You will loathe anything plush and your child will cry as you stuff every cuddly object in trash bags for 4 week of quarantine. The next month you will do more vacuuming and laundry than your average hotel chain. If you don’t catch it early, your ENTIRE household will be affected. The next 6 months you will find yourself subconsciously checking your child’s hair when your hands are free. And, your child will wear so much mouse in an attempt to never get it again, they boarder flammable. It’s that kind of traumatic!

This round I’m so over it, I decided to go the professional route. A few moms had raved about using Wanda & her staff at Total Lice Removal in Downtown Centerville. They do the arduous task of combing out all the nits (eggs) and bugs. In our group of Frequent Flyer lice club members, she has been dubbed a saint.

If you have never combed out hair for a lice treatment, let me break it down. Imagine sitting with your child for 4 hours. Their hair is wet and scalp raw from chemicals. Now mix in all the tension of math homework. Add a very tiny sharp metal comb stripping 1 inch sections of hair of nits and bugs. And if any of those nits or bugs are not cleaned up properly, in 2 weeks you’ll be doing it all again. You can imagine the joy that washes over parents when facing that task.

Total Lice Removal is in a very discrete building tucked behind other businesses in Downtown Centerville. The inside is set up like a beauty salon with a big TV facing the treatment area. Wanda has Netflix streaming, snacks, drinks and any other possible distraction for the process. The word lice does not appear anywhere on the outside of the shop. Nor does she book more than one family at a time. Right away they went above and beyond to make my daughter feel comfortable offering any of the amenities they had on hand. When I talked to Wanda, she said expect to be there about 2 hours. From our previous experiences, I mentally planned on 4 and debated headphones.

Well, a bag of Doritos and 3 commercial free episodes of My Little Ponies later, we were checking out. There were NO TEARS. No crying, no screaming, no pleads (threats) to keep still. It was peaceful and calm the whole time! When my daughter’s hair was done with the final rinse, her hair was put in a cute bun with her favorite color hair tie. Can I tell you what impressed me the most? She put a foot heater by my daughter to help keep the chill off of her during her treatment.

You’re assuming this will be astronomical, right? Nope. $125 for the full service and $10 for head checks. On her website she offers free head checks on Tuesdays and everything is by appointment only. Let me tell you, $125 isn’t even close to the amount of time, energy and stress of DIY with an over the counter kit. She even sends you home with paperwork and checklists on how to treat your home and a paper for the school. It was such a low stress experience for my daughter; that alone was worth every penny.

Right now you need to pull out your Smart phone and program Total Lice Removal 937-602-7530. I can’t say enough how much less stressful this has been by using a professional service!! You will NOT regret calling Wanda and handing the treatment part over. If you are reading this from out of town, I HIGHLY recommend calling a professional lice removal the moment you see a nit.

And a last little request from us moms that have fought the lice battle more than once. We BEG of you, PLEASE follow the school’s guidelines of no school until there has been a bug killing/removing treatment. PLEASE keep your child’s hair in a bun or braid to help control it spreading. PLEASE be open with teachers, coaches, and fellow parents that you have lice and let them decide how to proceed. It’s not that we judge you. We just don’t want the two month long vigilance that comes with ‘The Lice.’

*This is not a sponsored post. All opinions are my own and we paid full price for our service..and probably would have paid more!
