I had the pleasure to attend a book reading by an award winning children’s author and mom, Meaghan Fisher.  As she is a native of our own Troy, Ohio, you may have seen her at a recent event around town or on Living Dayton!

She is an eighteen time award winning author with several Five Star Book Reviews from around the world. Her books are known in the US and in the UK. Meaghan is currently touring the US, Italy, and Germany, where she is scheduled to appear at the two biggest book festivals in the world as part of her four year book tour. Last year, Meaghan was the featured author at the Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Savannah, GA ( the biggest in the world!) and the Miami International Book Festival in Miami Beach, FL . She is also the recipient of two Reader’s Favorite International Book Awards.

I am pleased to share with you a portion of our interview:

Are the characters in your books based on anyone?

I have two small children who are characters in three of my children’s books, I Love Ladybugs, If I Could Pull the Moon from the Sky, and coming this June, The Strawberry Festival. I also have a dog named, Sadie who is the character in my first published book, Sadie the Skunk, which she is well known in the area.

Why do you love writing children’s books?

As a child, my mother always read to me before bed or with my little brother because he was younger than me. Because of that, I believe that I am a published author today. My mother always encouraged me to read, write, and express myself. She loved my imagination and still encourages it today! Now as a mother myself, it’s great to see and use my life experiences that I have today with my children in my books and share them with the world to teach other children moral lessons.

What are you passionate about?

“I am most passionate about my two children and inspiring mothers to set aside time during their day, to read to their children.”

I do a lot of speaking engagements for Literacy: groups, clubs, associations, and educational societies. I talk about my books and how reading impacts children and their education.

“Just ten minutes a day can really make a difference in a child’s language skills, motor skills, and learning development.”

I know it is hard being a working mother, I am too. However, if you can set aside the time to read to your child or children once a day, or in the evening before they go to bed and follow that routine every day or night, you will see them grow from reading. Reading made a big impact on me as child and it can for yours too. Now as a mother, it’s great to see and use my life experiences that I have today with my children in my books and share them with the world to teach other children moral lessons.

Michelle
I am a mom of two little girls (a preschooler and a toddler), wife to a member of the US Air Force, and work full time for the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. After a few years as a stay-at-home mom, I recently went back to work and back into my first love, the performing arts. When I'm not at work, I am trying to figure out how to keep two little ones happy and entertained, and I blog at Domesticating Michelle. Originally from Miami, Florida, I first moved to Dayton when I got married in 2006. After a couple of years away, we returned with a child and a second on the way in 2013. One of the beauties of military life is that you never know how long you'll live somewhere so you might as well enjoy as much of it as you can. I love that Dayton has lots to offer families and kids with plenty for couples to enjoy on date night, too. I am often up way too late on Facebook or blogging and can be spotted with a cup of coffee nearby as a result. I usually have a camera around my neck and am more than happy to show you 100 pictures of what we did all weekend. What I like best about motherhood is getting to experience things through my kids eyes and that, in trying to expose my kids to new things, I have to be ready to do them, too.
