Family BBQ Night – Whole Foods Market Style!

This post is part of a sponsored relationship with Whole Foods Market. We pride ourselves on partnering with businesses we feel bring value to our readers.

I have a confession to make…I had never been to a Whole Foods Market until I was invited to shop this past week for my family’s barbeque! My 2 year old and I went on an adventure to find the perfect mix of adult food and kid friendly food! As many of you know, shopping with a 2 year old is an adventure in itself but I was pleasantly surprised. I expected high prices and food that my kids would refuse to eat – you know, the “healthy’ stuff! Boy, oh boy, was I wrong! As soon as we hit the door, we saw things that would be perfect for our barbeque! We just needed to decide what we would eat as the selection was huge!

I wasn’t set on my menu so seeing this magazine helped me narrow down my ideas!

What should have been a quick trip was actually a nice little outing for my son and I. We spent about an hour and a half just roaming and looking at all of the offerings at our local Whole Foods Market. We even ran into friends – an added bonus! He was so excited to see the toys and I was so excited to see the 365 Everyday Value brand! I love trying “store brands” as they tend to be a little cheaper than the big name brands and this store brand had a lot to offer.

After walking around I narrowed down what I wanted to prepare for our dinner. Chicken and veggie kebabs and (after seeing their brick oven pizza area) I was inspired to create my own grilled pizza for the kids! It was time to get down to business and get our supplies, but not without sampling some of the fresh pressed juices first!

Jameson gives a thumbs up to the Watermelon Mint!

My checklist:

  • Appetizer – wine, cheese, olives, roasted garlic and pretzel thins (their olive bar and cheese selection is one of the largest I have seen!)
  • Salad – salad mix, feta, purple onion, strawberries and balsamic vinaigrette
  • Main Coarse (adults) – chicken, variety of vegetables, olive oil, seasoning
  • Main Coarse (children) – pizza crust, pizza sauce, mozzarella, basil and tomatoes
  • Dessert – frozen kefir pops, caramel and apples
  • Drinks – Whole Foods Market seasonal special Watermelon Lemonade and Lime Mint Elderflower Sparkling Water

***Sidenote: Whole Foods Market offers most of what we needed already prepared but we like to prepare our meals together so we opted out, this time.

Really great pre-made options for any BBQ!

We gathered everything we needed for our family barbeque but couldn’t leave without glancing at the bakery! Have you seen their bakery? There is no shortage of delicious choices and honestly, it was difficult leaving without buying a few macaroons! I could have taken home the entire bakery! As we were getting ready to walk to the checkout lanes, I noticed the bar and coffee bar. I “needed” a hot cup of coffee that morning (you know what I mean!) and I am so glad I stopped and picked up a cup of their breakfast blend! Yummy!

Lindsey Gust-Niswonger
Hi there! I'm Lindsey! I'm a "boymom" and am so very "outnumbered!" but I couldn't be happier with my boys, Augustus and Jameson! I'm originally from Northwest Ohio but moved to the Dayton area when I married my husband in 2008. Together we have created a little family we affectionately call The Niswonger Frat House. We like to live a pretty simple life filled with a lot of family time, sports, good food and church on Sundays. I work for a local catering company part time as their photographer and social media coordinator. This adds to my love of food even more as I get to see these amazing dishes be created from start to finish! It's a really fun job and I am very lucky as I do get to take my boys with me to some of the events. I have dealt with endometriosis for most of my life and that lead to fertility issues but thankfully, God had a bigger plan for us. I am always an open book to anyone who has experienced these issues and love to hear from others about their experiences. We have to support each other as women and as mamas! I am absolutely addicted to Tim Hortons coffee, anything Tom Selleck and old television shows like The Golden Girls and Murder She Wrote! I'm a total book nerd and list the library as one of my favorite places to be! I'm really looking forward to being a contributor and learning more about other mamas and how they parent their littles! It's fun ride we are all on so let's high five and cheer each other on!
